As part of the upcoming Thre3Style DJ Battle in the Philippines, the people from Red Bull flew in DJ Qbert for an exclusive workshop and media Q&A last Friday, September 27 at Time Club in Makati City. Undoubtedly the world’s number 1 turntablist and hip-hop DJ, Qbert was joined by Yogafrog, his long-time DJ partner and co-mastermind of various DJ crews including the Invisibl Skratch Piklz, their current brand Thudrumble and the Qbert Skratch University. Yogafrog introduced Qbert to the crowd through a brief history of the art of turntablism which Q started almost 30 years ago which involved the crew in creating gears that influenced what the current DJs are using to this date. The Filipino DJ who has worked with EA Sports, Apple and more, was knighted by Grandmaster DXC, the DJ who was responsible for all the scratchings from Herbie Hancock’s b-boy anthem “Rock It’. Qbert who was the first DJ to use the turntables as a musical instrument, discussed different scratch techniques which he transcribed to his own musical notes to create representations of all the movements he creates on the vinyl and the crossfader. After the workshop, Sanya Smith of The Zombettes (appearing on our next issue!) hosted the Q&A for the media personalities and DJs who attended the event.
