Red Bull Music Academy hosts one of its world-renowned music sessions for the first time in the Philippines with Grammy award-winner DJ Jazzy Jeff as the speaker. In the 2-hour session held on January 8, 2016, the world-renowned artist shares unique insights from his musical journey at Museo ng Sining in Pasay City.
“He [DJ Jazzy Jeff] was just a kid with two turntables from Philly, but his career became massive – he already went on worldwide tours, worked with Grammy award winners, and he’s still doing it until now. That’s passion and love for the art right there,” Nathan J, the session host and acclaimed Filipino rapper, expresses.
Revered in the international hip hop and R&B scene, he is also known for his successful international rap acts in the 80s music scene, partnering with actor Will Smith as the duo dubbed as DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince.
Nathan J commends Red Bull Music Academy for opening such opportunity to local underground musicians and enthusiasts, remarking: “Music breaks walls down, and DJ Jazzy visiting Manila only means that this is a huge wall we’re going to break.”
Established in 1998, Red Bull Music Academy also extends their goal of fostering creativity in today’s musical landscape through their 3-month annual workshop in different places around the globe.
Just last year, the first Filipino musician snagged the chance to participate in the prestigious global music institution. JP Del Mundo, guitarist of Never the Strangers, was one of the chosen few who flew to Paris for the unparalleled musical experience.
“My stay with Red Bull Music Academy was life-changing. Being able to work with people I would never have met or heard of otherwise was amazing, because you get to see how they work and how they are all so different,” says Del Mundo.
In attending DJ Jazzy’s music session, Del Mundo shares his excitement and affirms, “The sessions are different every time, but that’s what makes it exciting! He has a lot of wisdom to share, and he can provide us with knowledge on what he has learned on a global level.”
