OUT OF SCRATCH S/S ’17 Review

by Andrew Florentino

Out Of Scratch is a long-time citizen of Manila’s club and bar scene, and can often be found spinning at venues like Big Bad Wolf, Black Market, Rocket Room, and The Palace Pool Club. What most people might not know are his online efforts at music selection and performance: hosted on a Soundcloud account, his mixtapes are introductions to his style and are extensions of his persona on the decks.

On S/S ’17, Out Of Scratch presents smooth, jazzy hiphop with a future trap edge in a window display mix that is almost too short. As we enter to peruse his wares, he quickly weaves in and out of hooks, taking us down a narrowing aisle of an assortment of Internet produce ranging from easily accessible (Young Thug, Chance The Rapper), to unfamiliar (Sylvan LaCue, Smino), to downright un-Shazamable.

The S/S ’17 Mixtape was premiered at Big Bad Wolf on March 18, 2017, but will feel right at home in a smoke-filled condo unit inhabited by any stoner that you know.
