2017 has been a spark-plug for streetwear, not just in the Philippines—even worldwide. And now that streetwear is starting to make some noise, you can holler with the rest as we celebrate National Philippine Streetwear Day 2018.  For #NPSD2018, we’ve prepared a streetwear capsule to expand your local go-to, from pillar brands established ages ago to the newer ones. Here are a few homegrown streetwear brands you could look into:

  1. UNSCHLD

Unschld has been lurking in the streetwear scene since 2007. “Unschooled” manifesto is to challenge the status quo, to isolate itself from any certain school of thought, and to embody a “self-taught” persona. For over 10 years of enigmatic presence, this persona is still mirrored in their latest collection dropped just last year, 2017.

  1. Mellow

Mellow is one of the neophytes you should spot on. Fresh from the basement last year. The creators have been playing around with contemporary arts for some time now, and they’ve transferred their vision into their first collection—Volume 1. Trippy Jive.

  1. Bastard

Bastard has been on the scene since 2014. Known for their signature smiley, casual style, and solid colors—Bastard is the perfect go to if you are feeling better, but not quite.

  1. Gnarly!

Gnarly has been making marks with comic-like graphics, popping colors and their consistent backdrop of music, skateboarding, street food, people—anything extreme, fun and basically, street.

  1. Don’t Blame the Kids

One of the pillars in the streetwear scene, DBTK is largely known for their graphics suited for adult kids. DBTK has just raised the bar when they tied up with Pony. This highlighted their 2017 milestone, climbing up the international ladder.

  1. Enimal

Better than basic. This local brand is rooted in Laguna, offering plains and patterns nationwide. Enimal has just released their Tonal collection, focused on fit, comfort, and color.

  1. Proudrace

The variety of shapes and sharps. Proudrace is a collection of daily wear with slick styles and clean cuts.

8. Nobody

Made by a bunch of nobodies. Nobody Clothing just released their second collection, All Good Things. The team behind nobody is looking forward to more collaborations this year featuring various artists, innovation starts at Cubao city.

9. MN+LA

MN+LA caters to everyday comfort. Plain tees and patterns are their forte, nothing loud just neat and casual.

10. Grocery World Wide

Grocery World Wide is a treat if you’re looking for subtle sleek, clean labels and designs. A go to if you aim to go laid-back and low-key.

The local scene has embraced not just the street culture but the people itself.  Both parties have grown through the years; more brands create and more people patronize them. This culture strives for variety and consistency. They are not just brands you could wear, but brands you could represent. United with the same philosophy as the people who wear and support them; to not keep up with the international trend but to make their own, to stand up and take pride in what indeed is ours.
