It was a momentous time in my life. Freshman year of college, finally an adult capable of doing all the legal things I had longed for. And a reminder of the stupid decisions I’ve made and the growth I’ve gained, is my first tattoo which I got in a humble garage-turned-studio, surrounded by my friends who anxiously asked, “Masakit ba?”.

Back then, getting a tattoo was a challenge. Tattoo shops were scarce, Pinterest didn’t exist, and society still held reservations about this form of self-expression. However, as time passed, society evolved, and people became more open-minded, tattoo shops sprouted and acceptance grew.

On July 15, I had the privilege of attending the opening of Redeemed Tattoo’s first branch in Luzon. It was an exciting event, as Redeemed Tattoo had made a name for itself in the city of Cebu, the birthplace of its CEO and owner, Boots Brandon.

Overcoming Trials and Finding Redemption

Back in 2013, Boots embarked on his dream of owning his own tattoo shop, starting in the confines on his own bedroom. Ever since he was young, Boots always possessed a deep love for painting and art. He eventually found his way into tattooing and started his apprenticeship. But what’s life without a few trials and some challenges? Boots went through some tough personal things and eventually found a way to REDEEM himself. Thus, the genesis of Redemeed Tattoo.

“I want everyone to know that there’s always hope. That’s what Redemeed Tattoo stands for.”

Ink and Inspiration

Creating a brand isn’t done solo. Boots found incredible artists to join him on this journey, like Dop, who Boots proudly describes as a very versatile artists. The team also welcomed Kibin Black, Boots’ former client turned tattoo artist. Another valuable member is Gab, who initially attended Boots’ tattoo seminars and is now an official member of the Redeemed Tattoo Cebu branch. And of course, there’s Boots’ long time homie, Real Jay, who coincidentally was the artist who inked me during my visit.

Entering the Redeemed Tattoo shop felt like coming home. The warm and friendly atmosphere, the accommodating staff, and the inviting energy all contributed to a positive experience. Surrounded by like-minded individuals who shared a love and appreciation for art, be it visual or musical, I felt a sense of comfort in this creative space. And that’s actually the main reason why Boots decided to open a branch in Poblacion.

“I wanna be surrounded with all the artists na sobrang creative, that I can be inspired as well. I can also share my energy.”

Being in the center of the culture just sparks more inspiration and drive. Poblacion, located in Makati City, embodies a lively and artistic culture. From the bars’ designs to the dishes served in the streetside restaurants, Poblacion exudes an unspoken understanding of embracing individuality. Walang basagan ng trip. This resonates with the Cebuano lifestyle, Boots shares that he encourages his team to express their authentic selves through art and any creative endeavor.

Boots excitedly mentions that he envisions his shop to be a sanctuary for artists visiting Manila, regardless of their origins – be it Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao, or even another country. He warmly welcomes artists of all kinds to explore the space, connect with his team, and collaborate.

Redefining the Narrative

“Walang pera sa art” You’ve heard this phrase a thousand times, but the tattoo industry proves otherwise. Artists can also be entrepreneurs, finding ways to turn their passions into profitable ventures.  And for someone like Boots, who comprehends the challenges faced by artists, working together with fellow artists can give their careers the fighting chance they deserve.

“I understand their hunger for creating tattoos… That’s why I can teach them how to market themselves. I’m not taking the creativity out of you. I want you to be you, but at the same time, we can work together… It’s all about respect, it’s all about communication.”

From Stigma to Empowerment

Over the years, attitudes towards tattoos have shifted, and they now find more acceptance in society. In the Philippines, generational norms and prejudices are gradually being overturned. I feel immense gratitude for people like Boots, who fearlessly carve their unique path in life and share their blessings, achievements, and dreams with others. Thanks to their influence, Filipino artists now proudly follow their passions, express themselves in countless ways, and fearlessly showcase their beliefs and inspirations.

Spot my ink! Though times have changed and attitudes have evolved, one thing remains constant- “Oo, masakit pa rin magpa-tattoo”.
