When foreign acts visit Manila, we expect a spectacle, a grand show that’s larger than life. But sometimes, the most unforgettable experiences are the ones that invite us into intimate moments.

Enter Charlie Burg, a rising artist who effortlessly captures hearts worldwide with his authentic and emotionally charged music. In a recent talk with CLAVEL, we delved into his musical journey, the power of vulnerability, and the importance of staying true to oneself.

Charlie Burg’s love affair with music began as a child, where he found solace in the soulful melodies of Motown and the captivating storytelling of Joni Mitchell and Cat Stevens. Jazz and soul became the foundation of his musical taste, while bands like Coldplay and The Strokes shaped his outlook on bands. This unique blend of influences and personal experiences propelled him towards a career in music.

“I think vulnerability is really important and that’s what people relate to in really good music.”

By crafting unique yet somehow familiar stories with songs like “Bookstore Girl” and “Channel Orange In Your Living Room,” Charlie brings you into a world of honesty and vulnerability. He understands that listeners have this innate ability to recognize authenticity and genuine expressions of emotion. For him it’s more than just a gimmick or a branding sort of thing, his writing, music, and overall artistic pursuit is a way for him to understand the world and process his own feelings. And by sharing his most vulnerable and honest self, he creates a real connection with his audience that goes beyond just listening to the sound.

“I suppose it’s the idea that you never know where your music can reach once you share it.”

At first listen, Charlie Burg’s music may seem like it doesn’t really fit into any one thing. His tracks are featured on the most random playlists such as “Study Playlist (Rory Gilmore’s Version),” “TikTok love songs”, and even “*brb crying*.”

It’s a feel thing, Charlie says. It’s a blend of everything he’s heard and liked, from classic hits from his hometown to movie soundtracks that inspire him to random ambient noises from parties. The only thing that ties his complex body of work is him. Every experience he has becomes part of his creative decision-making process.

“I think the times that an artist is most in touch with their fans are the moments when they’re most in touch with themselves as artists.”

As Charlie continues to discover his craft and venture into uncharted artistic territories, his focus remains on continually understanding himself. It may seem like too zen of an approach for a touring artist but that’s just the reality of it. Becoming self-aware, translating that into good fucking music, and sharing it to the world feels like a winning strategy. It may not be that simple, but maybe it is.

Despite his rising success, Charlie remains humbly grateful. During our interview, just a day before his electrifying show in Manila, he opened up about the immense love he’s received from this part of the world and how a huge chunk of his fans are right here in the Philippines. But little did he expect the sheer magnitude of the crowd that awaited him in person – a sea of devoted fans who knew the lyrics to every song, including the hidden gems buried deep in his discography.

It was a jaw-dropping moment, considering he hails from halfway across the globe and tells stories that unfold in places far from Manila. Witnessing the unwavering dedication of his fanbase in this corner of the world was nothing short of mind-blowing.

As Charlie continues to grow and evolve as an artist, his fans eagerly anticipate what the future holds. With his commitment to authenticity, vulnerability, and artistic exploration, there is no doubt that Charlie Burg will continue to capture intimate snapshots through his music, profoundly impacting the hearts of his listeners around the world.
