Like individuals, brands, bands, and even concepts go through transformations and evolutions over time. And it’s always fascinating to witness these changes unfold. In this CLAVEL feature, we had the rare opportunity to catch up with Ean Mayor, Paul Yap, and Carlos Tanada and talk about their headspace, new chapter, and the ever-changing times.

UDD, previously known as Up Dharma Down, has been a mainstay in the Philippine music scene for more than two decades. Their music is deeply ingrained in the playlists, memories, and moments of their listeners. And if you look closely, you’ll know that their history of making hits after hits and selling out countless shows has always been paired with their ability to experiment and elevate their sound and playing style. This understanding of how UDD navigates their musical journey makes their new chapter something to watch out for.

Recently, UDD turned it on again with an updated lineup and a renewed focus on their sound and presentation. After the initial wave of music videos, shows, and single launches, it looks like UDD is revisiting its roots and reinventing its creative process under a new light.

“After 20 years I think we’re still growing musically kasi we still discover things about our era, music, dynamics…”

Early Days

Back in 2004, UDD was formed as an experimental playground for its members – it was a way for them to explore different sounds from their previous bands. Under the guidance of their manager, Toti Dalmacion, UDD flourished and found their niche in the industry. It was a different time back then. TV and radio dictated the taste, the gig circuit was dominated by heavier music, and UDD’s introduction of seemingly experimental music at the time propelled them to new heights as musicians.

“We’re in the middle of growth and evolution in our music. Hopefully it’s something new.”

New Chapter

After the pandemic the band decided to give it another shot with the mindset of re-entering the motions and processes of a new band. This change gives them the opportunity to explore something different. From gigging endlessly in their previous run, the next stage for the band is going to focus more on the curation aspect of things; it’s going to be about creating a uniquely UDD experience.

“Familiar pa din yung [sound] just in a new perspective”

The (Not so) New Sound

The band’s new sound encompasses their take on electronic music while drawing influences from house, techno, disco, and even synth-pop, while remaining true to their distinctive rock/electronic fusion style.

“I’m sure yung hindi nakikinig ng UDD before ma-appreciate yung ginagawa namin this time.”

We recently caught a UDD show at Nokal and invited friends to see them without telling them about their new setup. It was a risk on our part, but our friends were happily surprised with the overall experience. The lights, the music, and the overall presentation gave a really cool spin on their old classics and new tracks. Thinking about it now, this may be a “canon event” for the old and new listeners of UDD moving forward. But we’re telling you right now that it’s a risk worth taking. Go to that show and experience it for yourself.

Looking back, the band admits that they’re happy with the legacy they left as Up Dharma Down including all the hits and triumphs, viewing everything after that as a bonus. They are now ready to move forward with a more personalized and collaborative approach to their music and shows. This shift is evident in their recent collaboration with singer-songwriter Zoya on the track “Kapoy,” showcasing their dedication to creating fresh and meaningful music.

“Kapoy” speaks about the universal struggle of finding that inner balance amidst this busy world.”

Looking Ahead

UDD is currently working on a new album and fine-tuning their shows as they continue on their musical journey. The band’s attention to detail shows how dedicated they are to shaping the new UDD, making sure that every aspect of their music and performances is carefully crafted.

Approaching things from a different angle, UDD is not only stepping into a new phase but also creating a whole new and unique experience for themselves and their fans. Their focus on evolving, collaborating, and refining sets the stage for an exciting future for this iconic band. With their talent and dedication, it’s clear that UDD deserves the spotlight just as much as before.

Follow their journey on Instagram and stream “Kapoy” and new tracks on all streaming platforms.
