What happens when a mix of established comedians and comedy maestros walk into a bar?
With SOLID OK, you’re pretty much guaranteed to witness a chopsuey of chuckles born out of the collective brain cells from its talented scriptwriters, directors, and cast.
We sat down with Ryan, Sari, Alexio, Lino, Andren, and Leo to give us a rundown on the sketch comedy group.
In the Beginning
Ryan Puno, being the all-around guy, kicked off this venture after studying the craft of comedy in the urban jungle of New York. Collaborating with his close friend, Mr. Netflix himself Red Ollero, he took the next step by starting a comedy sketch group in 2018 brimming with young, up-and-coming comedians.
From there, they’ve been making waves across media platforms, creating short-form video sketches and delving into writing and producing projects for bigtime companies. Among their numerous milestones, one of their most significant achievements lies in producing and directing Red Ollero’s Mabuhay is a Lie Netflix special – a testament to their talent and hard work.
From Standup to Sketches
Many of the SOLID OK cast members have strong roots in stand-up comedy, showcasing their skills as each set unfolds. With their unwavering passion for the art of laughter, they have successfully translated what they offer on the stage to what we see on our screens.
“It’s like a shot in the dark. You can’t expect to have an open mic and wing it from there, but we keep the cameras rolling just in case something funny happens. You’ll never know.”
In the wacky world of sketch comedy, you’ll never really know if the humor game is on point until you post it online and soak in the viewers’ feedback. Sometimes, it’s a slow burn as audiences gradually warm up to the style of comedy. That’s why the group cherishes the process in writing the material to not only fit their vision, but to enjoy what they’re doing with some solid company.
When asked about the atmosphere at work, they collectively agreed that they strive to foster a culture of good vibes only – both amongst themselves and with their audience.
Blood, Sweat, and Tears (of Laughter)
It takes a lot to be funny – both in talent and timing. While some scripts take around 10 versions to get it right, the spontaneity of comedy can sometimes swing in the right direction as a random shoot can lead to a hit video that could spin-off into a series.
“Mukha lang siyang effortless, but it takes a lot of effort in making it look effortless.”
Andren described this best as a 20-second sketch idea titled I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus, which, after continuous workshopping, evolved into a 2-minute video. This later became one of their most popular sketches to date.
Making Sense Out of Nonsense
“It’s the mentality of finding what’s funny in everyday situations that could be turned into a video. You don’t know what’s going to hit so you just put it out.”
The comedy collective prides themselves on creating content that portrays characters in a whimsical manner, where they make sense of all the silliness happening around the bubble of their sketches. Enjoying what they do, the members of SOLID OK anchor their comedy on what they find particularly funny, with their excitement enhancing their performances, as evident when watching their videos.
The group’s sketches illuminate the humor found in everyday situations, bringing out viewers’ inner silliness and embodying our country’s knack for finding amusement in even the most basic things in life.
For more limitless laughs and ridiculousness, you can find their sketches on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. Their most recent comedic concoction, Bobo Debates, is also out on YouTube and Spotify, where they crank up the absurdity to a whole new level while still providing their brand of insightful stupidity.
