Behind the bold stage name is Sammi, an artist, writer, and creative working a daily 9 to 5. Yet when the function comes around, BABY FREEZE is where all her loudest and most fearless instincts come to life.
In this CLAVEL feature, we sat down with our friendly neighborhood popstar-gangsta to get a glimpse into what it’s like for the young star to shine in the scene early on in her career.
Finding Her Way
There was never a blueprint on how to get into the music industry for one Sammi Borro. Despite her parents having a foot in it, she was never the nepo baby to make it a launching pad for her career. She even initially was a theater dork training to be on that stage, to eventually almost reaching another platform as a junior jock before COVID turned everything topsy turvy that led her to where she is.
“I’ll take to the grave that I am a performer. I’m 100% certain that I’m a good performer and no one can take that away from me.”
Embracing the influences of BROCKHAMPTON as having hiphop not being restricted to just gangster rap, her career was born out of sheer passion for music – wanting to write songs and perform. When Fête De La Musique 2023 rolled around, a sudden call by her friend Jorge led to BABY FREEZE’s first ever performance and she slid into the role with ease.
Commanding Confidence
Even if you haven’t heard a BABY FREEZE track yet, her commanding stage presence paired-up with catchy beats might grab your attention. In what the young artist describes as a “headturner”, once you’ve finished each track, you’ll notice that her lyrics come from this raw emotion of Sammi manifesting positive energies towards her success.
“I’ve been in a constant impostor syndrome cycle. I try to channel that into my music by reverse psychology – writing about how I deserve all these things and these opportunities wouldn’t happen if I wasn’t talented.”
Ever as confident in the bars that she spits out with the presence she brings forth, BABY FREEZE commands you to listen to her every word as if it were gospel. Being the theater kid that Sammi is, a whole lot of preparation comes with every performance – warm-ups and meditations to get her head in the game to turn the switch up to BABY FREEZE.
Best of Both Worlds
What elevates BABY FREEZE as an artist is that it’s Sammi’s heightened projection of both her strengths and fears – her vulnerability only leading her to figure out this music thing quite well. She has the benefit of compartmentalizing who Sammi is with her day job and all that. To her, music is a passion project but an important one; getting to release all her emotions unapologetically in song and on stage.
“I’m in my popstar-gangsta Hannah Montana era. Everything I like about myself in Sammi is manifested in BABY FREEZE, only 500 times more.”
Crafting hard-hitting bars about self-worth while maintaining a fun, confident, and relatable vibe is the duality of BABY FREEZE. Her latest single LIL ICE not only extends the lore of her persona, but also serves as both a flex and a motivational anthem. Lines like “Plant my seed and watch it grow. I’ll begin where you plateau” are more than just bars; they’re powerful mission statements.
Impossible to ignore, BABY FREEZE is carving out her spot in the scene: in your face, unfiltered, and not slowing down anytime soon. Her future in the scene isn’t just promising – it’s inevitable.
