It was a night of shared passion for the arts and discovering young talents as Red Bull announced Doodle Art’s Top 3 artists during its Final Gallery Night last Oct. 9, 2014 at Secret Fresh – Ronac Art Center, Ortigas.
In first place, Patrick Acma of Northern Iloilo Polytechnic State College wowed Doodle Art judge Archie Geotina with his mother-and-child work that used mainly contrasting colors and expressions to illustrate a parent’s sacrifice and a child’s chance for a brighter future.
“The infant represents us – me and my siblings – because… my parents are not rich. Actually, we are poor. So that’s what the woman in labor portrays. And the colored infant represents us. They can have their dreams through us,” Acma shared.
Second placer Manuel Lito Liwanag of Mariano QuintoAlarilla Polytechnic College brought pen and ink to life with small details and big ideas in black and white.
Liwanag explained that the pursuit of art was more than just a hobby.
“Sa akin naman po, sa family ko po – sa lahat po ng magkakapatid, ako nalang po walang napapatunayan. Naghahanap po ako ng way na maipagmamalaki po nila ako. (In my family, among my siblings, I’m the only one who still has something to prove. I’m trying to find a way to make them proud of me.)”
De La Salle University’s Mabby Triviño came in at third with a doodle riddled with bits and pieces of things she loved – her way of showing others the world through her eyes.
“I feel like through art, I make my parents and family proud even just a little. Somehow, it lessens the load for them and for me… it’s my escape from our financial problems,” she said when asked what inspired her.
Judge Archie Geotina chose Acma and Liwanag to intern with him and have their work exhibited along with his in December.
Triviño will represent the Philippines at the Doodle Art global gallery exhibit on Oct. 24 – 26, 2014 in Cape Town, South Africa where national winners from 22 other countries are set to participate. The international winner will be given an exclusive Red Bull design internship.
