With the COVID-19 pandemic in full swing, nearly the whole world is forced to cool their heels in their homes to slow down the virus’ rate of infection. We caught up with some of the wave-makers of the country’s culture scene to check in on them and what they’re going through during this time. Normally always on the go, now they have no choice but to sit still and answer some of our questions. This is Lockdown Sessions.
DB Tha Girl is one of the most electrifying voices in today’s local hip-hop scene. Though small in stature, she counts among the roster of giants in the hip-hop collective Baryo Berde. Her debut EP Aether is five nonstop tracks of solid hitters. Catch her during her live performances and watch this firestarter command the crowd like nobody’s business.
Describe a usual day for DB Tha Girl before the lockdown.
Back when the world was normal, I would usually get up, say my thanks, get coffee and then check my mail and social accounts—and these define what I’m gonna do with my day. Aside from being an emcee, I’m also a freelance graphic artist. So when I have a project, I’d spend my whole day doing that ’til it’s done. But on a lazy day, I would take my time, watch movies, look for new music, and I always try to MAKE something (anything) before the day ends, just to say that I had a productive [day]. I pretty much live my life like I’m in lockdown, I only go out when I’m going on a nature trip or gigs. And special occasions!
What’s a normal day for you now that you’re in lockdown?
Same morning routine, say my thanks and coffee, then check my socials… The difference is now I just always clean the house. Realizing that I can’t really go out makes me want to go out more. I think of times when I took my freedom for granted. But I’m really hoping things end soon because when it does, I swear I won’t bail on any plans anymore HAHAhuhu.
What was the last thing you did before the Luzon-wide quarantine?
I went to a gig at Kanto Art Space, March 14. It was for the closing of the #ewomancepation exhibit which was an all-women exhibit for Women’s Month. Only 4 people from the line-up showed up, everyone was hesitant to go because Manila’s gonna be on lockdown by 12mn. Haha they didn’t wanna risk it. The venue ended up closing at 7 pm. Ininom na lang namin yung isang case ng beer.
At the Fliptop Festival, Rocky Rivera and DJ Roza came all the way from the Main Stage to join the crowd and watch you perform. How dope was that?
Surreal! They actually delayed my time slot just so Rocky and DJ Roza could catch my set! I never thought in my life that that would ever happen. Rocky was one of the emcees that I listened to when I was just starting to write. To be able to actually know and connect with them is one of the most unforgettable moments in my journey as an artist! It inspired me a lot.
It is an honor and a dream to be a part of the biggest hip-hop event in the history of Philippine Hip-Hop! It was crazy thinking that I was walking on a huge field, with 3 stages, playing pure hip-hop. I never thought I’d be a part of something this big. I’m grateful, grateful!
Are there other female artists you’re looking out for? Anyone you’re excited about?
YES! It’s empowering to see more women representing themselves in this art form–we really be thriving out here! Personally, my favorites are Nikk Aape, Carm, ABI and Yanamint!
What makes FeMCs different from their male counterparts? Can y’all go hard?
Without a doubt! I think it’s the struggle that sets us apart. Just because a woman is small and cute doesn’t mean she can’t spit fire. Personally, one reason to listen to female MCs is because she provides you with a different perspective. We always hear what a man says, now listen to a woman speak.
Now that we’re all on lockdown, how do you plan to use all this free time?
I recently just dropped a home-recorded track called Waking Up. I’m currently in Parañaque [during] this lockdown, which is where I grew up and discovered myself. This lockdown just got me thinking about everything that happened to me and how I am in my place now. I’m spending most of my time discovering new music and painting or trying to create something at least as the days go by. I’m also trying out a new sound and will be releasing something before the lockdown supposedly ends.
What’s your favorite part of the house?
My room, haha! I can stay here forever, if only food made itself…
We have roughly 26 days before April 15, the supposed end of the lockdown. Kaya pa ba?
I’m barely keeping it together but I have no choice. I’m just hoping that the government does their job and praying for the best for all of us!!!! PLZ.
What’s the first thing you’ll do when the lockdown is over?
STAY IN THE MOUNTAINS FOR A WEEK OR GO TO THE BEACH FOR A WEEK!!!!!
What can we expect from DB Tha Girl when this lockdown is over?
It starts with an A and ends with LBUM!
