Since its debut in 2013, the Nike Tech Pack Collection has reimagined classic Nike silhouettes using Nike Tech Fleece: a pliable, lightweight layer of plush foam situated between soft cotton jersey that traps air to provide warmth, breathability, insulation and articulation.
Inspired by sport and fashion, the fall 2015 women’s line introduces vivid colors and bold new silhouettes that are built to layer. The modern, streamlined styles are slightly slimmer than previous collections, with flattering overlay tape, smooth jersey facing and finished necklines. Available locally is the Nike Tech Fleece Cape, which features a dramatic, feminine silhouette and includes a cocoon-like hood.
The menswear proposition has similarly evolved and features woodland camp camouflage and new proportions — along with elevated details, like multi-faceted zippered pockets. The Nike Tech Fleece Hoodie extends its rear hem for more coverage and protects its wearer’s face with a taller enveloping hood.
And since its debut, Nike’s Tech Fleece collections have garnered praise from not just fans, but from the world’s top athletes. One of them, who CLAVEL was fortunate enough to be privy to this exclusive interview, is Kevin Durant. Read on as KD talks about his favorite Tech Fleece details, basketball, life, and legacy.
What do you like about Tech Fleece?
Kevin Durant: First of all, the fit. It just fits me perfect. Tight fit is what I’m going for now. And they mixed it up with different prints. I had the camo on before. They’ve done a great job with it, especially with the small details, as far as the hoods and the zipper pattern. It’s definitely one of my favorite pieces.
How would you describe your style, and why is it important for you to be bold with your fashion?
Kevin Durant: I just like wearing good clothes, as simple as it may sound. I try not to do too much. If I don’t like it, I won’t wear it, no matter what design it is, or who made it. I’m real simple with it. If it’s a nice fit, I’ll wear it, even if it’s five bucks. I try not to do too much, but I like wearing nice clothes, as simple as it may sound.
Who do you think in the NBA has the best style, besides yourself?
Kevin Durant: Russell Westbrook. He’s really good. He mixes up his style a lot. He’s very classic, but he’s also very fashionable and stylish. Dwayne Wade is pretty good, too. There’s a bunch of guys, but if I had to say one guy, I’d say Russell Westbrook.
Style-wise, is there any competition between you and other NBA players?
Kevin Durant: I don’t want to say it’s a competition, but we always want to look good. Guys aren’t comparing all the time, but I think everybody wants their own lane to stay in, so I just try to do my own thing, and not worry about what other NBA players have on. The main thing for me is, I just want to enjoy what I have on and feel good in it. And I’ve been doing that lately.
NBA teams have to travel more than just about every other sport. What is the key to staying sane when you’re on the road so much?
Kevin Durant: Just staying close to your teammates, laughing and joking. It’s a long season. It’s an emotional rollercoaster sometimes, and staying close to your teammates and just enjoying them outside of basketball is what’s most important. It helps having electronics, as well. But just having that camaraderie with your teammates on the plane, on the bus, in the hotel, going out to dinner—that helps.
If you were to describe Kevin Durant and not refer to basketball at all, what would you say?
Kevin Durant: I’m simple. I’m low-maintenance. And I’m spontaneous. Those are the three words that I would use.
What are you most passionate about off the court?
Kevin Durant: I’m most passionate about helping the youth. I’m big on setting a good example for kids coming behind me, letting them know the value of work by leading by example and being vocal. As much as I can, I try to talk to the other guys and let them know the struggles that I went through and the struggles that they’re going to go through when they come up this path. I’m just trying to help.
What motivates you to put up shots after practices? Why do you stay in the gym longer than you have to?
Kevin Durant: I just want to be consistent with everything I do. I want to consistently be the best player on the floor every night. You can do it once or twice throughout a season, but I want to do it every single night. So I want to continue to keep working at it, and I just want to be the best player I can be. My work ethic was instilled in me as a kid, so I never forget it.
What is your biggest fear?
Kevin Durant: My biggest fear is that I might be taking it all for granted. Being able to do something I love every single day is a blessing. We play so many games, we have so many practices—it flies by. By the time it’s all said and done, I worry that I might not have really enjoyed every single day as a pro.
When you retire from the NBA, what do you want your legacy to be?
Kevin Durant: I want to be a Hall of Famer, have multiple championships, and most of all, I just want to leave my mark on the city. I want to inspire the youth in the city I play in and be remembered as one of those guys that impacted lives, on and off the court.
What do you want your legacy to be outside of basketball?
Kevin Durant: Outside of basketball, it’s simple. I want to inspire, I want to lead people in the right direction and I want to show people what love is.
