In the vibrant world of drag, where self-expression knows no bounds, one individual stands out for their extraordinary talent in hair and wig styling. Meet Angelo “Gelo” Adame, also recognized as Zycho or Zychotic in the world of drag. In this interview, we delve into Gelo’s journey, inspirations, and explore the transformative power of wig styling in the world of drag.

Discovering the Path

Gelo, facing a conservative environment that challenged their authentic self-expression, forged a unique path.

“It started when I was a young gay boy, who experimented with blankets and towels. And somehow I just managed to ‘fight my right,’ I had to fight my way for them to know that this is me, there’s no changing, I like boys… I like dolls, I like dresses, I like wigs and makeup.”

They discovered the art of hairstyling, drawn to it by their background in the field, and naturally gravitated towards wig styling.

“Before I became a wig stylist, I was a hairstylist for several shoots and occasions. So I used those hairstyling skills and applied them to the wigs. And that’s where I entered the drag scene. Some queens started asking me for commissions, and then there.”

This newfound passion opened the doors to the captivating drag scene, fueled by commissions from fellow queens that ignited Angelo’s drive and propelled them on an extraordinary journey.

The Power of Wigs

For Gelo, wig styling holds a profound transformative power. Wigs are not simply strands of hair; they carry stories and embody personalities. They find immense fulfillment in creating wigs that represent various facets of human character, whether it be beauty, horror, kindness, or mischief.

“Hair is an extension of our personalities, our crowning glory. And I was like, ‘I love to just play with it.’ There’s just something about hair that boosts our confidence.”

The artistry and creativity of wig styling empower Gelo to embody diverse identities on stage, enabling them to truly shine.

As Zycho the Drag Queen

Gelo, also known as Zycho, identifies as an alternative drag queen and advocates for supporting drag queens of all styles.

“Think of it as two best friends: one would be glamorous, one would be horrifying or goth. It’s a much more understandable picture for them to process.”

This drag genre incorporates a wide range of expressions, from spooky and campy to downright bizarre, setting it apart from the mainstream drag aesthetic. Unlike traditional drag queens who epitomize glamour and glitter, alt queens embrace a more unconventional and eccentric side of drag, fostering a space for expression and creativity.

Vision for Zychotic Wigs

When asked about their aspirations for Zychotic Wigs, Gelo dreams big.

“Oh, call me delusional, but I want to see my wigs on billboards. On billboards, commercials.”

Gelo’s ambition reflects their unwavering dedication to their craft and their determination to elevate wig styling to new heights. Alongside their success, Gelo also imparts valuable advice to aspiring wig stylists.

“Don’t be scared to ruin the hair because that was my mistake when I was starting out. I was too insecure about how it would look afterward. I was very scared of ruining the hair. And then I realized, ‘You know what? Let’s just destroy this sh*t, and then let’s see where it goes.'”

Ultimately learning that taking risks and pushing boundaries often leads to stunning outcomes. Embracing mistakes and exploring uncharted territories can unlock hidden potential and unleash one’s creativity. So, Gelo urges aspiring wig stylists to let go of inhibitions and let their imagination soar.

Gelo’s story is a testament that reminds us of the transformative power of self-expression, and the limitless possibilities that come with embracing our authentic selves.
