There’s something inspiring about talking to young rappers. Starting a career in music while navigating the complexities of the craft and industry is no easy feat, but each artist brings a unique story to the journey. At CLAVEL, we celebrate those who share their realities through their art.

In this feature, we dive into the story of Nero Metro, a young rapper from Pasig whose music captures the raw essence of growing up. With heartfelt lyrics and infectious beats, Nero brings to life the struggles and triumphs of youth in a way that’s both relatable and real.

The Foundation

Nero Metro’s name pays homage to the Roman emperor Nero, a figure infamous for “burning his city to the ground.” For Nero, the name symbolizes his ambition to shake things up with his powerful lyricism.

Music has always been a part of his life. Growing up, his dad introduced him to genres like New Wave, hip-hop, and alternative rock—sounds that continue to influence his craft today. Being raised around great music helped him refine his taste and view music not just as entertainment, but as a tool for self-expression. As a young kid trying to find his way, he turned to songwriting to process the sadness and inner conflict every teenager experiences.

His rap journey began with the Mark Beats challenge, a viral trend where local artists rapped over a 24-bar beat for a chance to gain recognition. Nero Metro’s entry marked the beginning of his commitment to music, and he’s been honing his skills ever since. Inspired by artists like Kendrick Lamar and Ron Henley, he takes his lyricism seriously, always refining his writing to elevate his storytelling.

I just love making music,” he says, embracing every aspect of the process—from beat selection and sampling to crafting his verses.

The Sound

When describing his sound, Nero emphasizes depth and self-expression. He’s less concerned with mainstream appeal and more focused on staying true to himself. His lyrics reflect his everyday life and youthful experiences, painting a picture of the world through his eyes.

For Nero, the goal is authenticity: “Gusto kong gumawa ng kanta para sa sarili ko.

His EP, My Sweater Now Smells Like Detergent, chronicles the stages of moving on from lost love. The title symbolizes a fresh start, as the scent of heartbreak is replaced by the clean slate of a freshly washed sweater—articulately narrating the emotional journey of moving on.

Except for the track “Lumalalim,” written in 2021, the EP came together in just two months. With the help of PROGRESS Records, Nero carefully curated each detail to tell a cohesive story of heartbreak and healing.

The Future

Nero Metro has found his place with PROGRESS Records, the independent music arm of the clothing brand PROGRESS, led by Edouard Canlas. Known for prioritizing impactful music over commercial success, the label gives Nero the creative freedom to stay authentic. As a co-producer, he’s deeply involved in every step of the process, refining his craft and growing as an artist along the way.

Looking ahead, Nero Metro plans to release an album, perform more shows, and continue creating authentic music that resonates with both him and his audience. His journey is a testament to the power of staying focused on your craft and committed to your vision, no matter the obstacles. Follow his story on Instagram at @nerometro.
