If you want an injection of groove and funk into your audible consciousness, then listening to flu might be the melodic medication that you need. Behind all that, they’re just four chill dudes geeking over things they like, which is making music that they like.
In this CLAVEL feature, we unearth flu’s creative process in navigating the time and pace spent cooking up the album.
Finding That Groove
As the band started with a thesis concept crafted by 3/4 of its members, their friendship and shared passion for music gave birth to flu – especially fueled by their common interests.
Despite the band being only in the scene for 5 years, they have managed to perform in multiple international stages and festivals, repping the country with their melodic grooves and soul-grabbing sounds that resonate with listeners from different regions of the globe.
Continuously growing after every show and every experience, not rushing into things helps with processing and is key in fueling their music and performances.
Stuck in the Pandemic’s Timeloop
“Nagfizzle out yung drive namin to do music, like a lot of other bands. However, taking our time apart reinvigorated us para bumalik ulit.”
Ironically enough, the musical aspirations of the band were hampered by an actual pandemic. The time spent away from each other forced their trajectory to go topsy-turvy as life needed to find a way to go on.
The 4-piece act had a lot of introspection after performances and shows in the online space to cope not just with their own situation, but also to provide solace for their fans. This was an attempt to grasp a semblance of normality through a reimagined version of live performances – even though it didn’t gather the same feelings from watching performances in-person
A much needed break was needed for each of the members to focus on their individual growth, taking time to handle responsibilities such as work and relationships. These experiences have helped shape the album from its origins as naive college graduates to a more mature reflection of their priorities.
The Perfect Pace
Enter, Time & Pace.
Songs that were previously released were reworked with a renewed passion fueled by the learning experience brought about by the pandemic. This was influenced by their evolving music tastes, seeing what could be changed or added.
Older songs that didn’t resonate with their current vision were set aside. This allowed for newer songs to blossom and better align with the band’s current artistic direction.
After primarily spending time in studios and performing online shows, the band’s meticulous attention to detail has now seeped into their live performances. They continuously strive to recreate a specific sound by incorporating elements such as backing vocals, post-production, modernization, and a crisp sound – aspects they hadn’t fully explored earlier in their career.
Give the album a listen on Spotify and vibe with the 5-year journey they’ve cooked up. Let it take you on a reflection trip through your own past 5 years while you navigate this current chapter in life.
