On a seemingly ordinary Tuesday afternoon, we got a chance to talk to the guys of KoolPals. Behind the camera, they were very serious men, but as soon as we pushed the red record button, they went off. They lovingly made fun of each other at every opportunity. They are known for this. It’s their brand.

The KoolPals have carved out a niche that’s all their own: a refuge of humor where no joke is too sacred and no topic too taboo. This fearless crew, composed of GB Labrador, Nonong Balilan, James Caraan, Muman Reyes, and Ryan Rems, embodies the resurgence of comedy in Manila, proving that laughter isn’t just the best medicine—it’s a way of life.

Origin Story

“The dream was to put up a stage for all the hard working comedians and work on having each of them get their own following.”

The start of KoolPals wasn’t born out of a planned strategy to make it big in the podcasting world. Instead, it sprouted from the simple need for a platform where these comedians could talk shit with their friends and ideally carve a following for each of them.

It started when James Caraan, while juggling his dual life as a stand-up comedian and an IT professional, invited GB and Nonong to start a podcast. Like all great ventures, it began with procrastination. Three months went by in a blur, but a visit to Raon to score some gear finally set their plans in motion. Their first recording session wasn’t in a state-of-the-art studio b1234ut in GB’s room. The setup was humble, their first guest an invitation to laugh across cultures with Malaysian comedian, Phoon Chi Ho, and their expectations nonexistent. Yet, from those modest beginnings, the KoolPals started something that would grow into a staple in Manila comedy.

Over time, Ryan and Muman joined the squad, and their daily podcasting throughout the pandemic introduced new segments that kept their followers hooked. From horoscopes to culinary experiments, the KoolPals proved their versatility and commitment to entertainment, one episode at a time. Fast forward to now, and their setup has transformed, courtesy of the Pod Network, enhancing their delivery without losing the essence of their raw humor.

“We’re fans of each other’s comedy”

The KoolPals have achieved more than they ever dreamed since their first impromptu session around GB’s kitchen table. Hosting a live podcast at Manila’s Music Museum, celebrating anniversaries they never anticipated, and creating a segment dedicated to their partners, dubbed KoolGals, are just a few of their milestones. Despite their success, the heart of KoolPals remains in the unscripted chaos of their interactions.

Manila Comedy Universe

“Once you’re a comedian, you’re always a comedian”

To understand the KoolPals is to peel back the layers of Manila’s comedy scene, which, according to them, is experiencing an unprecedented boom. More comedians and a wider variety of comedy styles mean that there’s something for everyone—from dark humor aficionados to fans of the absurd. The KoolPals have played no small part in this comedy renaissance, offering a stage for new and seasoned comics alike and fostering a community of like-minded people.

The Hero’s Journey

“It’s a never-ending process to find what’s funny to strangers.”

The KoolPals’ journey has been sprinkled with lessons vital not just to aspiring comedians but to anyone with a dream. Patience, authenticity, humility, and the importance of surrounding yourself with positivity are principles that have guided them through their adventure. Their personal message echoes: You don’t have to conform to trends; your unique voice is your most significant asset.

As they reflect on their path and look to the future, the KoolPals are thankful for the community that has grown around them. Their podcast has become more than just a show; it’s a vibrant community of people who share a love for laughter. They’re excited about the future, hopeful for the continued evolution of their craft, and endlessly grateful for the listeners who tune in to laugh along with them.

The story of the KoolPals is not just about making people laugh—it’s about creating a space where people feel included and appreciated. As they continue to deliver their unique blend of humor and heart, their journey serves as an inspiring reminder of the power of laughter to unite and uplift.

5 Years In The Making

Their 5th anniversary is promised to be a great show. They jokingly share that it’s going to be a crazy lineup of fights, music, and a lot of shits and giggles. As of writing, their 5th-anniversary show is now sold out. So if you’ve already got your tickets you’re in for a hell of a ride. If not, you can still get your dose of comedy from the group by tuning into their podcast.

As we ended our interview with them they suddenly went into song mimicking the Aldub anthem while thanking everyone who contributed to their 5th anniversary show. Spotify, Gabi Na Naman Productions, Tai Chi Philippines, and KÜCHI KUCHi.

And with that, this seemingly random Tuesday transformed into a memorable conversation that served as a reflection on their career, growth, and all things funny.
